Read on to know who requires ISP registration in India.

What does ISP Registration mean?

ISP full form is Internet Service Provider. The ISP Registration a.k.a ISP license is a mandatory requirement for those who want to start an internet service provider business in India. In order to obtain an ISP license, an application needs to be submitted to the Department of Telecommunications.

ISP Registration Types

ISP Registration, or ISP License, whatever you want to call it, has three categories based on the regions in which the internet service can be provided. The license fee for each category differs. Those who want to provide internet services in India must pick at least one category depending on their budget and the area they want to cover for providing internet services.

ISP Registration Category A

Category A ISP License or registration is meant for businesses that want to provide internet services at a national level i.e., all over India. Category A ISP registration holders in India are less in number as the license fee is quite high.

However, by obtaining the ISP license, you can get customers from all around the country as your services won’t be limited to a particular part/region of the country. So, if you have the budget for the ISP license for Category A, you can consider obtaining it.

ISP Registration Category B

The ISP Registration / ISP License Category B covers one of the 20 major states or any of the following Metropolitan Cities namely Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. GOI keeps issuing notifications about the territories which are considered as telecom circles and metro areas from time to time.

The fees for Class B ISP Registration is less than Class A ISP Registration but more than Class C ISP Registration. For those who just want to start their internet service provider business as a startup, it can still be expensive. However, it is necessary to select this category if you want to operate in urban regions.

ISP Registration Category C

ISPs wishing to offer internet service in any secondary switching area under the Department of Telecommunication (DOT) are eligible for ISP Registration Category C. Category C ISP License India is reasonably priced. This has been ensured by the relatively inexpensive C class ISP License fee.

Because class C ISP licenses are relatively inexpensive, it is desirable for startups to establish a class C ISP. Therefore, you can choose to go for an ISP license type C if you want an internet service provider license to offer internet services to a small town or a village.
