What is with the Government of India and this next-generation 6G? A lot has been buzzing around it. With the latest DoT notification, India, with its latest innovation in R&D, is enabling a front-line 6G technology. The projection is facilitating 6G technology across the country by 2030.

Is Bharat 6G another move for AtmaNirbhar India? The Government of India plans to become AtmaNirbhar by providing a vital technology and contributing to the global good by upgrading the following facilities of the Nation:

  • Industry
  • Startups
  • Academia
  • Research Laboratories
  • Standardization Bodies
  • Government

TIG-6G Mission of the Department of Telecommunications

The Department of Telecommunications formed a Technology Innovation Group on 6G, acronymed as TIG-6G, in November 2021. The Group held membership accounts from various Institutions, such as the following, to develop Vision, Mission, and Goals for the 6G Technology:

  • Government Ministries
  • Departments
  • R&D Groups
  • Academia
  • Standardization Bodies
  • Telecom Service Providers
  • Industry Experts

The Mission also seeks to develop roadmap plans for 6G in India. The TIG-6G has constituted the following six Task Forces with the Government and membership:

  • Multi-Disciplinary Innovative Solutions
  • Multiplatform Next-Generation Networks
  • Spectrum for Next-Generation Requirements
  • Devices
  • International Standards Contribution
  • Funding Research and Development.

The forces will work on emerging telecom technologies in the next decade, focusing on innovations leveraging new technologies for effectively delivering solutions. This device ecosystem will support spectrum management, enabling the oncoming explosion in wireless communications.

Government Vision's for Bharat 6G

The Bharat 6G Vision Statement is as follows:

"The 3Ds, i.e., Design, Develop & Deploy. The aim is to provide a 6G network technology for ubiquitous, intelligent, and secure connectivity provisions enabling a high-quality living experience for people."

The DoT bases the Vision of 6G technology on principles of ASU, i.e., Affordability, Sustainability, & Ubiquity.

The purpose of 6G implementation is to empower the collective Vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Such an accomplishment of indigenous technology will empower every Indian to become self-reliant. Also, it ensures that India becomes a leading supplier of advanced technologies as well as affordable telecom solutions contributing to the global good.

One can assess the Vision of a 6G India is in coherence with India's idea of Azadi ka Amrit Kaal.

Apex Council for 6G Mission: Phase-wise Objectives

The DoT constituted an Apex Council to lay down the phase-wise objectives for Bharat 6G Mission.

The Phase-wise objectives for the 6G Technology setup are as follows:

  • Consultations with the Bharat 6G Alliance
  • Suggestion for R&D pathways and their exploration
  • Reviewing the task progress periodically
  • Accomplishing External Evaluations
  • Suggest corrective actions, if any

Our Apex Council constitutes Technical Committees. Such committees generate proposal calls. They also address technical challenges through a resourceful PMU. Here, PMU stands for Program Management Unit.

Phases of Bharat 6G Mission

With the advent of 6G connectivity in India, the Industry will tap into the R&D as well as startup ecosystem to bring new innovative ideas. The Government has promised to provide adequate provisions for the needed financial support.

DoT plans to launch the 6G Mission in two phases, namely:

  • Phase 1 from 2023-2025: Period of 2 years
  • Phase 2 from 2025-2030: Period of 5 years

These two phases will be launched simultaneously, with the former working as a beta release of the technology in the market.

What constitutes the Bharat 6G machinery?

The Mission Bharat 6G is headed by a Joint Secretary or similar Level officer. The adopted structure is a lean governance mission-mode structure. Such a setup enables, during the mission period, leveraging organizational capabilities.

The Mission will be staffed by professionals from around the Industry as well as research institutions. As for the setup of a Technical Committee, it will comprise the following dignitaries:

  • Experts
  • Researchers
  • Industry Experts

Each such entity will be hired for evaluating funding proposals.

The Government will also arrange administrative sanctions for the Mission for proposals from the Competent Authority. But such tasks will be performed as per administrative procedures as well as a financial delegation.
