In the context of telecommunications, a tower refers to a tall structure fitted with antennas and other essential equipment required for transmission and reception of cellular signals. It ensures network coverage in a specific area. Tower installation refers to the process of constructing and setting up this structure at a designated site. It involves groundwork such as laying the foundation, assembling the tower, mounting antennas, and connecting the necessary cabling to integrate it into the network.
Entities developing passive telecom infrastructure, including towers, ducts, and fiber networks, must register with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and obtain the required license. To learn which license is required for tower installation, check out this post!
For installing a tower in India, IP 1 License is required. It is a telecom license issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The full form of IP 1 License is Infrastructure Provider Category 1 License. Businesses with this license can provide assets such as tower, dark fibre, right of way and duct space.
This telecom license was opened to the private sector with effect from 13 August 2000.
To apply for tower license with DoT, you must ensure you fulfill the following eligibility criteria:
The applicant must be a business entity. Individuals cannot apply.
The applicant must be registered as a public limited company/private limited company under the Companies Act 1956/2013.
Tower installation requires several steps, from registering your company with the Registrar of Companies (RoC) to site selection and land approval. This section defines each crucial step involved in tower installation in India:
You must register your company with the Registrar of Companies (RoC). For this, you must prepare all the required documents. The Memorandum of Association (MoA) and Articles of Association (AOAs) should mention your company’s intention to serve as an Internet Infrastructure Provider.
After registering your company, RoC will issue a Certificate of Incorporation. You will need this document during the DoT registration process to secure a telecom license for tower installation.
Once your company has been registered, you must prepare all the required documents for filing an application with the Department of Telecommunications. These documents include Certificate of Incorporation, Memorandum of Association (MoA), Articles of Association (AoAs), list of all the directors and shareholders, KYC of directors and demand draft.
Once all these documents have been prepared, you can file an application with DoT.
You must submit an application to DoT along with all the required documents and pay the processing fee.
After submitting the application, you must wait for DoT’s approval. If your application meets all the requirements, DoT will issue the license for tower installation.
You must look for a suitable location for tower installation. You must take into account certain factors like population density, network coverage requirements and land availability. Apart from this, you must conduct site surveys to check about the terrain, its soil conditions and the potential environmental impact that tower installation could cause.
After selecting a suitable location, obtain land approval from the owner and local authorities. You may also need a No Objection Certificate from the area's pollution control board.
Towers must be installed at least 100 meters away from hospitals and educational institutions, such as schools and colleges.
Now, you must approach a tower installation company and discuss the tower design based on the required specifications and local regulations. Ensure the use of all necessary construction materials and equipment, including antennas, transmission lines, and power systems. Follow all safety and regulatory protocols set by DoT and local authorities throughout the construction process.
The minimum distance from a house must be 20 meters in case of a single antenna. For two antennas, the minimum distance must be 35 meters. For four antennas and six antennas, the minimum distance must be 45 meters and 55 meters, respectively.
After installing all the telecommunication equipment, you must thoroughly test them to check their functionality and signal strength. Once you successfully complete all the tests and make the necessary adjustments, the tower becomes eligible for operational use.
After installing the tower, you must ensure compliance with all post-installation requirements:
Once the tower becomes operational, ensure that all installation activities adhere to DoT guidelines and local regulations regarding tower height, radiation levels, and environmental impact.
Develop a tower maintenance plan for regular inspections and repairs to keep operations running smoothly.
Focus on minimizing the tower's environmental impact and visual impact.
If you want to install a tower in India, you must get authorization from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). To receive authorization, you must file an application for IP 1 license. After receiving this authorization, you must get land approval and construct a tower with all the necessary equipment.
If you need assistance in the IP1 application process, you can connect with Registrationwala’s telecom consultants.
