Every business wants to grow their business outside the limit of the domestic market, however these days it becomes easy to reach the global market because of technology and the internet.

Before starting a business, you have to follow several registration procedures and obtain licenses. Import Export Code is one license which is required for importing goods into India and exporting goods outside the country.

The license is issued by a Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). It is a 10 digit code with a lifetime validity. The import and export merchants cannot import or export goods without the IEC.

Documents Required

  • Copy of PAN card
  • Aadhar card or passport copy
  • Cancel cheque copies of current bank account
  • Copy of rent/ lease agreement or submit electricity bill copies of the business premises.
  • Self-addressed envelope for delivery of IEC certificate by registered post.

Steps of Import/ Export Code Registration

  • Visit the official website of DGFT.
  • Click on Services and choose the ‘IEC Profile Management’ option from the drop-down list.
  • A new page will appear, choose the option ‘Apply for IEC’.
  • Click on register, enter the required information and click on send OTP.
  • Enter OTP received on phone or mail.
  • Once the registration gets done, you receive a temporary password for login.
  • Login into the DGFT website. Choose ‘Apply for IEC’ option on DGFT website.
  • Fill the ANF 2A format, upload all required documents, pay the fees and click on ‘Submit and Generate IEC Certificate’ option.
  • Your IEC code will be generated and you can print a hard copy of it for future reference.
