TAN’s full form is Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number. The Income Tax Department issues a 10-digit TAN to all individuals who are engaged in deduction/collection of taxes. The Income Tax Act makes it mandatory to quote TAN on all TCS and TCs returns. If you want to know how to apply TAN Number, then check out this guide!

What is TAN Number?

TAN Number is a 10-digit alphanumeric number that the Income Tax Department issues to an individual who collects or deducts tax at source (TDS or TCS). Under the Indian laws, the TAN number registration is an essential part of tax compliance.

The current TAN registration number structure consists of 4 alphabets in the beginning, followed by 5 numerals and then alphabet again at the end. The first 3 TAN alphabets represent the jurisdiction of the holder. The 4th alphabet is the holder’s name’s initial letter. The next 5 numbers are exclusive identifying numerals having no additional significance. The last alphabet of the company TAN number acts merely as a unique identifier.

Is it Mandatory to Apply for TAN Number?

Yes, it is mandatory to apply for a TAN number if you deduct or collect tax. Section 203A of the Income Tax Act mandates that every individual who deducts or collects tax at source must apply for the TAN allotment.

TAN is required to be quoted in all TCS and TDS transactions. This includes e-TCS/TDS return, TDS/TCS challan payment and TDS/TCS certifications.

Any person mandated to obtain a TAN may experience problems filing tax returns when he/she does not apply for it. A penalty of Rs. 10,000 will be imposed for returns or documents that do not include the TAN number.

Individuals do not need to submit any documents while applying TAN number apart from the TAN number application form and fees when applying online.
