UIDAI stands for Unique Identification Authority of India. The Aadhaar Act 2006 established the UIDAI under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and authorized it to issue Aadhaar numbers to Indian residents.

It has eight Regional Offices in different Indian cities in addition to its headquarters in New Delhi. Its two data centers are located in Manesar, Gurugram, Haryana, and Hebbal, Bengaluru, Karnataka.
