Why is the Procedure of ISI Mark Registration Important?

Indian Standards Institute (ISI) is a certificate scheme under BIS that ensures products meet safety and quality standards. The mark allows manufacturers to use the ISI Mark on their products to show the quality of the products. In India, manufacturers of over 346 products must have a mandatory ISI mark to sell or produce products.

ISI Certification is the most recognized product quality certification mark by BIS. It guarantees that the product is maintaining safety and quality standards. Obtaining an ISI Mark is a process that proves that electrical items or appliances are safe to use.

To register a product with the ISI Scheme of BIS, manufacturers or importers must follow pre-defined procedures such as testing, application filing, inspection, and application scrutiny conducted by the department. Below all important aspects of obtaining an ISI mark are mentioned.

What is ISI Mark?

ISI stands for Indian Standards Institute. It is a mark on a product which aims at providing a guarantee of the quality, reliability and safety of the products to the end consumers. The ISI mark is issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards.

Further, obtaining an ISI certificate is voluntary in nature and it is not mandatory to obtain an ISI certificate for every product. However, by taking public health into consideration the Government of India has made ISI certification mandatory for certain classes of products.

Products for Which BIS Certification is Mandatory

The government of India has made BIS certification mandatory for certain products by keeping in mind the health and safety of the people. So, these products cannot be sold without obtaining a BIS certification. The product list is long, you can check the complete list >>Here<<. But some of the products are as follows-

BIS Product Certification Scheme

Through the BIS Product Certification Scheme, an ISI mark certification is provided to the manufacturer of the product. It is one of the largest schemes in the world, with over 26500 licensees covering 466 products. With BIS Certification the licensees are empowered to use the popular ISI mark on their product, which is synonymous with quality products.

As per Government notification, all the products mentioned above are mandatorily required to have BIS certification. BIS also operates the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme through which a license to use the BIS Standard Mark is granted to overseas manufacturers. At present, over 350 licenses have been granted for over 50 Indian Standards in 40 distinct countries.

Benefits of ISI Certification

Obtaining an ISI certification has numerous benefits some of them are as follows:

  1. Firstly, it ensures that your products are manufactured with proper standards, and confirms the security of products. However, this sets them apart from uncertified products and ensures uninterrupted production.
  2. Secondly, a certified product enjoys an extensive market because it is perceived to have better quality and conformity to safety standards. As a result, it is more trustworthy and provides manufacturers with broader market access.
  3. Lastly, the standard quality provided by ISI Certification gives manufacturers a competitive edge. Hence, customers generally prefer certified products over uncertified ones as there is no guarantee of quality.

Complete ISI Mark Procedure to Ensure Quality Products

Since 1955 the ISI mark has been seen as a mark of quality and that’s why consumers believed in products that are ISI-certified. If a product is marked with ISI, then it should have a license number with 7 to 10 digits.

The ISI mark on the product indicates the Indian standard number for that specific product. You can verify the authenticity of the CM/L No., which is the license number, one can check the BIS website. So, BIS now encourages manufacturers to use QR codes along with the BIS website reference on the product to ensure its authenticity.

Before using the ISI standard for a product, a manufacturer must acquire a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards under its Marking scheme. They should also follow the quality control procedures stated in the license. However, the top authorities of BIS will monitor the manufacturer's quality control measures to ensure that they maintain good quality. Samples from the products will be taken and tested in BIS-approved laboratories at any time.

However, if a customer has any complaints about the quality of the ISI-marked product, they should immediately contact BIS officials. The government will investigate any complaints as soon as possible. If a manufacturer is found to be using the ISI mark fraudulently, they will face legal action.
