How to Register to Vote in India?
On 25th January, 2025, Indians will be celebrating National Voters’ Day. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of voting. Voting is a civic duty that is crucial in every election, regardless of how big or small it is. Each vote is essential to make a difference and offers a chance for individuals to participate in a real democracy.
In the upcoming month (i.e., February, 2025), Delhi will hold the 2025 Delhi Legislative Assembly election for all 70 constituencies. If you have never voted before, and want to cast your vote in the upcoming election, then go through this article wherein we explain to you how to register to vote in India. Who can Cast their Vote?
The right to vote, also known as suffrage, is guaranteed by the Constitution of India under Article 326. Under the Citizenship Act of 1955, all citizens have the right to cast their vote, regardless of their race, color, previous condition of subjugation or when they acquired their citizenship.
However, as per Election Commission of India (ECI), certain conditions must be met by citizens to be eligible to become voters:

Every citizen who is 18 years old on the qualifying date i.e., first of January of the year of revision of electoral roll, can be a voter.

Overseas Indians can be voters if they are deemed to be ordinarily resident at the address mentioned in the passport.

Service voters are also eligible to become voters if they are deemed to be ordinarily resident at their home address.

Enrollment can only be at ordinary places of residence.

Who is not Eligible to Vote?
If a citizen is declared by the law to be unstable to vote or barred due to corrupt practices or illegal acts relating to elections, they are not eligible to vote. Further, if an individual is not an Indian citizen, they cannot be registered in electoral rolls.
Documents Required for Voter ID Registration
Voter identification has been made mandatory by the ECI at the time of polls. In order to cast your vote, you have to show your Voter ID Card issued by the ECI or any other proof allowed by the ECI.
If you do not have a voter ID card and want to apply for it, you must be in possession of the following documents:
Proof of Date of Birth
The following documents must be submitted as proof of date of birth during voter ID registration process:

Driving license.

PAN card.

Indian Passport.

Certificates of class X or class XII provided by CBSE/ICSE/State Education Boards.

Birth certificate issued by Competent Local Body/Municipal Authority/Registrar of births and deaths.
Address Proof
As part of voter ID requirements India, the following documents can be submitted as proof of address during voter ID registration process:

Utility bills such as water, electricity or gas bills that are not older than 1 year.

Registered sale deed.

Aadhaar card.

Indian Passport.

Registered rental or lease agreement.

Revenue department’s land-ownership records such as KisanBahi.

Current passbook of a public sector bank/scheduled bank/post office.

How to Apply for Voter ID Card?
The Voter ID Registration process can be completed either online or offline.
Online Voter ID Registration
To apply for online voter registration, the following steps must be followed:
Step 1: Visit the official Voter Portal of the Election Commission of India.
Step 2: Click on the ‘sign up’ option available on the homepage.
Step 3: Enter the mobile number and email address. Now, enter captcha code before clicking on ‘Continue’ option.
Step 4: Now, enter your first and last name, password and confirm password before clicking on the “request OTP” option.
Step 5: Enter the OTP received on your mobile no. and email. Then, click on the verify button.
Step 6: Now, click on the login button to log onto the voter services portal. Enter all the required information to login and then click on ‘Request OTP’.
Step 7: Enter the OTP received and then click on ‘Verify & Login’ button to proceed further.
Step 8: Thereafter, click on the ‘Fill Form 6’ option available under the ‘New registration for General Electors’ tab.
Step 9: Enter all the required details in Form 6 including: personal details, Aadhaar details, birth date details, relatives details, contact details, address details, and declaration. Then upload the required documents in the required fields. Once done, click on the ‘Preview and Submit’ button.
Step 10: As a final step, click on the ‘Submit’ button after ensuring all the details are filled correctly.
Offline Voter ID Registration
For offline voter registration, the following steps must be completed:
Step 1: Visit the Booth Level Officer’s Office and ask for Form 6. Alternatively, you can download Form 6 by visiting the Voter Services Portal and then clicking on the ‘Download’ option on the ‘New Registration for General Electors’ tab.
Step 2: Fill the form with correct information.
Step 3: Once the form is filled, attach all the required documents with it and submit it to the Booth Level Officer’s office.
Can you Vote without a Voter ID?
If a person does not have a voter ID card, they can still cast a vote. For this, they can carry any of the following documents, specified by the Election Commission, to the polling station:

Passbook issued by Bank/Post Office with Photo.

Driving license.

Aadhar Card.

Pension Document.
