Testing Stages of Hallmarking in India
There are 3 testing stages involved in BIS hallmarking in India, namely, homogeneity testing, purity testing and individual item making. Each step has been explained below:
-
Homogeneity Testing: Every item is taken from a given simple to conduct homogeneity testing. These items are checked minutely so as to ensure that they meet the regulatory standards and requirements of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
-
Purity Testing: Purity testing involves choosing one of 50 similar items randomly. A preliminary test is performed on the surface of each item. Thereafter, smaller samples are collected for every item’s detailed scrutinization. For checking the gold’s purity and value, the tests are intensified.
Individual Item Marking: Individual item making is the hallmarking process’ final stage of testing. Laser and press are used for imprinting the hallmark on gold based on the test’s final outcome. The gold may be hand-marked in some cases.
